Create an event and encourage industry organizations to participate:
The 2012 World’s Largest Swimming Lesson (WLSL) will take place on June 14, 2012 at 11 a.m. EST/3 p.m. Water parks, community pools, and aquatic facilities both domestic and international will participate to build awareness about the vital importance of teaching kids to swim to prevent drowning. Last year’s WLSL event set a new Guinness World Record with over 20,000 participants on five continents.
How can you get involved?
Aquatic facilities have until May 30, 2012 to register as an official WLSL Host Location. There is no cost to participate. Just go to www.WLSL.org and complete the online registration. Registered Host Locations have access to a full set of tools to help organize their local lesson and promote and publicize the event in their community – all materials are available via download.
Don’t miss the chance to take your place in the record books. Help smash the WLSL 2011 Guinness World Record and spread the word that Swimming Lessons Save Lives™.

Use a mascot to teach children the importance of water safety:
East Shore YMCA uses their mascot Josh the Otter to give water safety presentations to over 1000 children in local elementary schools May 4-18, 2012.

Plan a special themed day around water safety and use it to promote their products and as a way to give back to charity.
Redlands Pool & Spa Center focus on water safety and fun for all ages at their “Swim Safe Saturday” program where they get their local fire department, YMCA, and the Red Cross involved to offer programs to teach the community about water safety. Also, they offer the opportunity for various manufacturers of pool and spa related safety products to attend. A portion of the retail sales for that day is donated to a local aquatic program to help provide financial assistance to families for swim lessons and water safety education.

Create special programs for children that focus around the theme of water safety:
Florida Swimming Pool Association members create several different programs for children where they incorporate activities, prizes, safety tips, entertainment, animals, and locally known mascots into promoting water safety.
Incorporate the message of water safety into an existing local event:
Florida Swimming Pool Association members raise awareness for water safety and funds for swimming lesson scholarships in Brevard Country by joining with the Brevard Country Parks & Recreation Department and the Run Brevard Recreate You Life race series.

Set up local community water safety seminars:
During the months of April and May, Sears Pool Management sets up water safety seminars at local area venues. Some of the water safety topics that their seminars feature include RWI prevention, drowning prevention, safer steps to safer pools (the NDPA Safer 3 program), the CPSC Pool Safely program, and information on shallow water blackout, swim lessons, and CPR training.

Use the “I’m a Safe Swimmer” pledge to teach an elementary school classroom about safe swimming:
They work with a local elementary school to teach kindergarten classrooms the “I’m a Safe Swimmer” pledge and distribute APSP “I’m a Safe Swimmer” water safety wristbands as giveaways to each classroom.

In an effort to celebrate safety all year long, in March of 2012, they co-sponsored the second annual “Pool for Pros” 8 ball tournament which raised $5,000 in funds for the Make a Splash Foundation. This event was an evening of pool, raffles, and 50/50 drawings. The first year that they co-sponsored the event they raised $4,000 for the foundation which provided free swim instruction to over 600 people.
